Penny’s Bacon and Cheddar Dog Treats

Everyone knew when I adopted Penny, that it wouldn’t be long before I was baking her some homemade dog treats. I concocted this recipe on my own after researching the dietary limitations of dogs and observing Penny’s insatiable desire for bacon and/or cheese.

Here are some things that you should never feed your dog: chocolate, coffee, tea, anything that contains caffeine, anything that contains artificial sweeteners, onions and unbaked bread dough that contains yeast. Some dogs have trouble with dairy or wheat, but Penny seems to be fine with those, so I included them.

As always, please consult your vet if you have any questions regarding your dog’s eating habits. I am not an expert on dog nutrition, I just know what my dog likes and digests without trouble.

Here’s the recipe!

Penny’s Bacon Cheddar Dog Treats

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour (plus more for rolling)
  • 1/4 cup almond meal
  • 1/4 cup ground flaxseed
  • 1/2 lb bacon, cooked and crumbled, reserve drippings
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce

Preheat the oven to 300F. Combine the flour, almond meal and flaxseed in a medium bowl. Add the crumbled bacon, with it’s drippings, the eggs, the cheese, and the applesauce. Blend until it comes together into a thick dough. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll to approximately 1/4 inch thick. Cut into shapes with a cutter or simply slice the dough into squares. Place the treats onto ungreased cookie sheets and bake at 300F for 50 minutes. The long but low baking time helps the treats dry out and get nice and crunchy. They also stay fresh longer this way.

Penny approves! She is  fairly small dog, and my dog bone cookie cutter is a little big, so I break up the treats into more reasonable portions for her. She likes them so much that she is even learning to roll over with a little bacon based motivation!

I might have created a monster, now she doesn’t like her old treats as much….

Hey Penny, want a MilkBone?

Bacon or bust!

Haha, just joking, she still loves MilkBones, but these were a big hit. Make them for the lovable pooches in your life!
